Soil & Bioremediation

Session 3
September 23th to 25th

This session will focus on the introduction to soil science, composting and bioremediation with a focus on land based activism and organizing.​

Schedule:

Friday Sept 9th 5pm - 9pm

  • 5:00 - 5:30 Check in and housekeeping and territory acknowledgment

    • Venting emotions - What makes you excited/overwhelmed/anxious? How do you channel/deal with it in other ways?

  • 5:30 - 7:30 African Dance with Jacky Yenga

  • 7:30 - 8:00 potluck dinner

  • 8:00 - 8:30 Introduction to the weekend/activity

  • 8:30 - 9:00 Clean-up

Saturday Sept 10th 10am - 5pm: Soil Life & Principles of Bioremediation

  • 10:00 - 10:30 Check in and housekeeping

  • 10:30 - 11:30 Soil Life

  • 11:30 - 11:45 Break!

  • 11:45 - 12:30 Vermiculture - Maintaining a Worm Bin  

  • 12:30 - 1:30 Lunch

  • 1:30 - 4:00 Intro to Bioremediation

    • 30 mins Social Remediation

    • 90 mins Contaminants, Soil testing, and practical steps for remediation working with fungi, plants, and bacteria

    • 45 min - Design a Bioremediation Plan

  • 4:00 - 4:30 Hands on activity - Brew some compost tea for soil & plant health

Sunday Sept 11th 10am - 5pm: Hands-on Techniques for Bioremediation

  • 10:00 - 10:30 Check in and housekeeping 30min

  • 10:30 - 11:15 Assessing the land (including CEC testing)

  • 11:30-12:30 Compost methods 

  • 12:30 - 1:30 Lunch

  • 1:30 - 4:30 Working with Fungi for Remediation

    • 45 mins Basic Principles to low-tech cultivation

    • 45 Making Cigarette Digesters (working in a glove box)

    • 45 mins Making Bunker Bags (mycofiltration, outdoor cultivation principles)

  • 4:30-5:00 Closing & Clean-up
